74 years later, ‘she is still the light of my life’

Sunday March 29 marked a remarkable milestone for David and Beth Clark, who celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary surrounded by family at the Nambour RSL.

The couple’s three children – Peter, Christine Pearse and Jai Christiante – joined partners, grandchildren and great grandchildren for the occasion, reflecting on a lifetime built together.

Though David had prepared a speech, he asked his grandson Adam Clark to deliver his words on the day.

In paying tribute to his family, David summed it up simply: “There’s not a dud among them.”

He then shared the story of how he met Beth and the life they built together.

“I first set eyes on Beth in a youth orchestra we were members of; me playing the violin and Beth playing the piano. I asked her to come to the Murgon Show with me, and when we held hands for the first time, I knew this was the girl I wanted to marry.

“I used to ride my bike the 15km from Wondai to Murgon to see her, then I’d catch the train back home later in the evening, with my bike in the luggage compartment.

"After I proposed, Beth’s parents thought we were too young to wed at 20 and 21 until Beth convinced them that by joining her older sister and have a double wedding it would be so much cheaper, they readily agreed.

"We both wanted to leave the close communities we had lived in, making a fresh start, so off we went, first to Maryborough, then Gladstone and finally to Brisbane, where we set up home in Stafford and started our own family. Those were good years, but the move to the Sunshine Coast proved to be our golden opportunity, and here we still are 62 years later.

"After 74 years, I still love her. She is the light of my life.

“I reckon I could write three books on the adventures we’ve had, the places we’ve been and the good times we’ve seen, always together, although, we could have seen a lot more if we didn’t have to stop so often for Beth to take so many darn photos!”

Daughter Jai then recited a poem she had written for them…

Seventy-Four Years

Seventy-four seasons, hand in hand, each sunrise shared, each promise planned.
The laughter softened, the faces lined, but still, two hearts beat intertwined.
The world changed shape - as worlds will do, yet through it all, remained the two.
Weathered storms and gentle peace, moments fleeting, love that won't cease.
What builds a life is not just years, but whispered hopes and dried-up tears,
The simple grace of growing old, with stories stitched in threads of gold.
So here's to time — not lost, but earned, to every lesson life has turned.
Seventy-four years, still side by side - a love that lives, that won't subside.
