Nambour to honour Anzacs 111 years later
- From Nambour RSL Sub Branch President, Wes Davidson
It is a span of time that stretches beyond a single lifetime, yet the echoes of that morning in 1915 remain as piercing today as they were over a century ago.
As the first light touched the rugged coastline of the Gallipoli Peninsula, thousands of young men – our Australian and New Zealand troops – stepped off their boats and into history. They did not land on a beach of gold, but on the narrow, unforgiving scrub of what we now call ANZAC Cove.
We must remember who they were. They weren't just soldiers in uniform; they were farmhands, clerks, and students. Many were just boys – teenagers who had lied about their age for the chance to see the world, their faces still smooth, their hearts full of a courage they hadn't yet been forced to test.
The losses that followed were staggering. The cliffs of Gallipoli became a monument to a generation of potential cut short. The silence that eventually fell over those ridges left a void in homes across our nations that could never truly be filled.
Today, we stand in the peace of their legacy. Every freedom we enjoy—the right to speak our minds, the safety of our families, the very air of liberty we breathe – was paid for in a currency of sacrifice we can scarcely imagine. They gave their "tomorrows" so that we might have our "today."
It is now our solemn responsibility to ensure that the dust of a century does not settle over their names. We do not gather here to glorify the horrors of war, but to honor the humanity of those who endured it. We keep their memory alive not because we have to, but because we owe it to them to never let their sacrifice fade into the shadows of the past.
As we look upon the world they left us, let us carry their stories forward. Let us live lives worthy of the price they paid.
Lest we forget.
This years ANZAC services for the Nambour RSL Sub Branch will commence with the Dawn service at 05.30am at quota park followed by the main service which will step off from Howard Street at 08.55am lead by the Parade Marshall to Quota Park. After the service all are invited back to the RSL club for refreshments.
