BushCare volunteers recognised for decades of service
BushCare News with Norm Morwood
More than 30 years of attendance at BushCare action bees was recognised with 10-year certificates from BushCare Sunshine Coast, presented to volunteers Norm (that’s me), Don and Kel, pictured, at the recent BushCare bee at Florabunda Pocket, Woombye.
And that’s in addition to the main reward for this activity – the satisfaction of caring for the natural environment.
The BushCare Sunshine Coast program is run by the Environmental Operations Branch of Sunshine Coast Council. In the case of our three groups in and near Nambour, it operates in partnership with Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group.
BushCare Sunshine Coast provides everything required by volunteers who spend a couple of hours each month turning degraded sites along Petrie Creek into local native habitat for native animals.
Expertise, tools, materials, plants, bright green shirts and protective gear are all provided. The volunteers supply the labour for weed control, planting and associated activities.
Apparently, it is a “labour of love”, judging by the enthusiasm of teams of up to 20 or more people who come each month to each site. It surely couldn’t be just the attraction of the excellent cuppa provided at the end of each event!
If you’d like to join us in these BushCare activities to improve local native animal habitat, the next opportunities at our sites are:
• Namba Creek on Saturday, July 18, from 8am. Access is through the main gate of the Model Rail Park off Florence Street, Nambour.
• Gulung Gung on Wednesday, July 22, from 8am. The easiest access is from the rear car park at Aldi, by walking down the rough track around the northern side of the car park and across the low-level bridge, or by walking across from Quota Park.
To join in the action, you’ll need to come in “long everything” bush-protective clothing, including boots or shoes and a hat. All tools required will be provided.
Let Norm know you’re planning to come by email, or simply turn up on the day.
