When those camphor laurels just have to go
Petrie Creek BushCare News with Norm Morwood
Two more camphor laurels were cleared with the aim of increasing the local native vegetation at our Namba Creek BushCare site on the creeks around the model Rail Park in Nambour. Sadly, despite the nice smell and the beauty of the Camphors they supress the growth of most other species and exclude the growth of many of our local plant species.
We had the majority of camphors in this area removed a few years back, but these two were left at the time so that the area was not totally devoid of trees. Now with significant growth of the native trees and undergrowth planted over the years, leaders of the BushCare group, Leah and Lauren, with funds provided by SCC, organised to have contractors Treesafe remove these two and a few other bad weeds like the large African Tulip nearby.
There is still some mulch to spread and lots of native plants to install. So, if you’d like to join us in these local native animal habitat improving BushCare activities, the next opportunities at our sites are:-
• Namba Creek on Saturday 20 June starting at 8am. Access is through the main gate of the Model Rail Park off Florence St Nambour.
• Gulung Gung Wednesday 24 June from 8am. Easiest access is from the rear carpark at Aldi, by walking down the rough track around the north side of the carpark, across the low level bridge, or walk across from Quota Park.
To join in the action, you’ll need to come in “long everything” bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. All tools required will be provided. Let’s know you’re planning to come by email to Norm or just turn up.
