Bushcarers tend native plants to create protective overstorey

Petrie Creek BushCare News
with Norm Morwood

Pictured above are seven of the 17 enthusiastic BushCarers at Namba Creek at September’s Bee, watering and controlling the weeds among the planted natives.

This is in the small creek that stretches west from the main entry gate to the Model Rail Park. The aim is to complete the overstorey of native trees, which in turn will shade out most of the weeds for the long term, making habitat for the local native animals.

The most obvious ones at this site are the Brush Turkeys and Water Dragons, but there are lots of others that get on with their own lives given the right conditions. Insects are probably the most numerous, but there are many others, including fish, frogs, birds etc.

If you’d like to join us in these “local native animal habitat” improving BushCare activities, the next opportunities at our sites are:

Namba Creek on Saturday, October 17, starting at 7am. Access is through the main gate of the Model Rail Park off Florence St, Nambour.

Gulung Gung on Wednesday, October 28, starting at 7am. Easiest access is from the rear carpark at Aldi, by walking down the rough track around the north side of the carpark, across the low-level bridge, or walk across from Quota Park.

To join in the action, you’ll need to come in “long everything” bush protective clothing, including boots/shoes and a hat. All tools required will be provided. Let us know you’re planning to come by email to Norm or just turn up on the day.
