Taste the trail: RV travellers discover Queensland’s local bounty

Queensland is now home to over a quarter of a million recreational vehicles (RVs) – the highest across Australia. With no signs of slowing down, it’s no surprise that new lifestyle trends are emerging from the Sunshine State.

Gone are the days of roughing it on plastic plates, uncomfortable camp chairs and inflatable mattresses. Today’s ‘cara-fans’ are seeking luxurious experiences and gourmet delights.

Over the past four years Australians have increasingly prioritised locally sourced food[1]. In fact, two thirds now prefer to buy local produce[2]. This shift in values has sparked a growing trend of caravanners and campers choosing destinations based on food and wine trails, eager to sample the rich bounty in regional Queensland.

Queensland scenic food and wine trails celebrate the state’s agricultural heritage and culinary offerings. These self-guided routes lead travellers to local producers – farmers, artisans, wineries, and breweries – offering a taste of the region, as well as a chance to meet the people behind the produce.

The “farm to fold out table” movement gives RV adventurers the opportunity to connect with the source of their food, and of course, be able to taste it fresh!

CEO of Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Queensland Jason Plant, says the popularity of caravanning and camping continues to inspire new trends.

“It is great to see how this latest trend is taking our caravanners and campers to different locations and supporting our regional communities.

“There are so many amazing destinations in Queensland, from the wines, spirits, cheeses, chocolates found on the Atherton Tablelands Food and Wine Trail, through to Maleny for dairy products and Kenilworth for peanuts, right down to over 50 wineries located in the Granite Belt Wine Trail in Southern Downs.

“The bonus? You’re not just indulging in high quality fresh produce - you are supporting local family-run businesses,” Plant said.

Ben Beadel, Director of Country Style Holiday Park, reports a remarkable 80% increase in visitor numbers over the past two years, attributing the growth to the region’s thriving food and wine tourism.

“Our guests are primarily empty nesters with dual incomes who are drawn to the exceptional culinary and wine experiences Stanthorpe has to offer,” Mr Beadel said.

“They typically stay for two to three nights, enjoying curated wine tours, scenic trails and visits to the many outstanding wineries—all conveniently located within ten minutes of our park.”
