Club’s tribute event funds vital support for cancer patients

Yandina Bowls Club’s Chairman Leon Granzien & Secretary Alex Blake met with Bloomhill’s General Manager Mervat Quirke and Fundraising and Community Engagement Lead Jasmine Wheatley to celebrate the club’s $3,500 donation.

The Yandina Bowls Club held its annual Memorial Bowls Day a few months ago to raise funds for Bloomhill Cancer Care and by so doing celebrate the lives of members who have passed, especially those who suffered from cancer.

The Club took great pride in being able to handover to Bloomhill a cheque for $3,500.

“This is now our fourth year running this special event”, said Chairman Leon Granzien.

“Through the tremendous generosity of our members and sponsors attending the Memorial Day, including their families and friends, we were able to increase our contribution to Bloomhill from $600 in the first year to $3,500 this year. This amount was way beyond my expectations, and I’m so proud to be involved with the fabulous people who support and volunteer at this club.”

Mervat Quirke thanked the Club for its kindness, and for helping to support those impacted with cancer in the community.

“Bloomhill is largely funded from sales at their Op Shops, and that additional funding from donations from clubs and other supporters really made a difference,” Mervat explained.

“We are so grateful to Yandina Bowls Club for raising these funds for Bloomhill Cancer Care”, Jasmine Wheatley said, “Your generous donation of $3,500 will help fund care packages for about 16 newly diagnosed clients as they begin their Bloomhill journey. Every new client receives a personalised treatment plan led by our nursing team, along with a group program pass, a remedial massage and lymphatic assessment, and an exercise physiology session. These early supports make an enormous difference, helping people build strength, feel understood, and gain confidence during an incredibly vulnerable time.”

About Bloomhill Bloomhill Cancer Care is located in Buderim and is currently supporting around 1,600 people, with more than 350 new clients each year seeking their personalised nursing, counselling and wellness care.

Bloomhill has helped many thousands of people adjust to life after cancer since it was founded in 1997 by breast cancer survivor and palliative care nurse, Margaret Garan.
