Community campaigner welcomes car park decision

A Queen Street business owner who helped galvanise opposition to the proposed sale of the Howard Street car park says the outcome is a win for accessibility and community voices in Nambour.

Ali Atkinson, of Rogues Gallery, organised a banner and community photo at the site on Monday that drew about 100 people at short notice, highlighting the level of concern among residents and traders about losing the space.

Following confirmation the sale would not proceed, Ms Atkinson said the decision ensured a critical piece of infrastructure would remain in place.

“Nambour voices have been heard. A critical piece of accessible car parking infrastructure will remain to serve our community's needs. That's all we wanted,” she said.

“Thanks to all who worked to achieve this outcome today. Thanks to Division 10 councillor David Law and to Sunshine Coast Council for engaging with us and working with us all. I left this morning's meeting confident that a more complete understanding of Nambour community sentiment and needs will be sought earlier when considering future development here.

“Nambour's future is bright! I welcome the opportunity to work more closely with Council to ensure that the lives of all people in our community will be improved by future development.”
