Undervalued & overlooked: Budget disappointment ignites hinterland frustration
By Cameron Outridge
A storm of frustration continues to build across Nambour and the hinterland following Sunshine Coast Council’s adoption of a budget many say fails to deliver for communities west of the Bruce Highway.
At the centre of the backlash is Council’s decision to delay the long-promised Nambour library and community administration centre by at least six years – despite millions being found in previous years to complete similar projects in coastal centres.
Division 10 Councillor David Law labelled the deferral “deeply disappointing,” noting the project had already absorbed $1 million in preparatory work and was ready to proceed this financial year.
Residents were quick to respond online. “Nambour just gets left out again,” one said. “We pay the same rates – but see little return.”
Council has cited a $20 million budget shortfall as a key factor in the cutbacks. That same shortfall has helped drive a 7.4% rates rise across the region – leaving some locals asking why Nambour ratepayers are “paying twice” for Council’s mistakes.
Despite their concerns, both Cr Law and fellow hinterland representative Cr Winston Johnston voted in favour of the budget. Cr Johnston said it was a “difficult decision” and acknowledged “losing sleep” over cuts to rural road upgrades and other deferred capital works.
Local leaders are urging a rethink. Nambour Chamber of Commerce president Mark Bray said the town’s “good bones” make it an ideal candidate for investment, noting Council could achieve meaningful improvements with a fraction of the cost required elsewhere.
‘I Am Nambour’ spokesperson Rhonda Billett agreed, saying years of consultation, planning and community collaboration had created expectations that were not met in this year’s budget.
“We’ve endured years of community consultation, seen plenty of pretty pictures, and that should have translated into more serious budget commitment,” Ms Billett said.
