Twenty eight years ago, Marcus Priaulx woke up in Nambour Hospital following a fatal high-speed, head-on car crash.
“As I opened my eyes, I saw a woman sitting beside me. She introduced herself as the hospital counsellor and asked me if I wanted to use her services,” Marcus said.
“Being a bloke, I didn’t see the need to talk to someone at the time.”
But the counsellor continued to speak to Marcus and he describes the situation as a life changing moment for him.
The experience was so profound that Marcus went on to become an ACA Level 3 counsellor himself.
“I’ve had many more of these moments in session since, as somebody in therapy, and clients have had them with me as their therapist,” he explained.
Marcus now encourages people to think about seeing a counsellor, particularly when they’re stressed, worried, or facing challenges.
“You can find clarity and resolve your problems by talking about them to a non-judgmental third party,” Marcus said.
“Friends will, intentionally or not, give advice based on what would be good for them if they were in your situation. But they’re not you and it’s not their life. A counsellor will use methodologies to help you to make the best decision for you.
“When I see people, I personally don’t care whether they stay with their partner, leave their job, move to another destination or stay put. My interest is to give them the clarity they need to realise what steps they need to take to lead their best possible life. Only they can answer that, and I find the process of counselling enables them to make clearer, better decisions.”
Marcus has now begun to work privately as a counsellor and welcomes people to contact him via his website at www.counselling4clarity.com.
