From curtains and blinds to shutters, the right choice can transform your home

Business Feature: Custom Curtains & Shade

Choosing curtains, blinds or shutters can quickly become overwhelming. There are colours, fabrics, styles, privacy, heat, light and security to consider – and what looks good in a catalogue does not necessarily work in your home.

That’s where the experience of Nambour family business Custom Curtains and Shade can make the difference.

The business has operated since 1989, with Jim and Julie Dudley taking the helm in 2008. Since then they have helped homeowners turn ideas into practical, attractive window furnishing solutions tailored to the way they actually live.  “We don’t just show up with swatches,” Julie said. “We ask the right questions. How do you use the room? Where does the light hit? What do you want to feel when you walk in?”

Customers can begin that process by visiting the Custom Curtains & Shade showroom on Hospital Road, Nambour, where they can see products, explore fabrics and gather ideas before deciding what will work best in their home.

With one of the most extensive fabric collections in south-east Queensland, the showroom gives people the opportunity to compare options rather than trying to make an important design decision from photographs alone.

The business has also welcomed new sales representative Rocco Startari to the team, adding over 35 years of experience to the industry knowledge available to customers.

Custom Curtains and Shade offers custom-made curtains, blinds, shutters, motorised awnings, security screens, patio enclosures and wallpaper, with many products locally manufactured. “We’re not here to sell what’s on trend – we’re here to find what works for you,” Jim said.

That can mean finding a curtain which softens a living room, blinds that control harsh afternoon sun, shutters that improve privacy or Crimsafe security screens that provide greater peace of mind.

Julie said good design had to work in the real world. “A luxurious curtain is only worthwhile if it works in the space,” she said. “That’s why we take the time to match the product to the purpose — light control, thermal insulation, privacy, or visual impact.”

The family-owned business works with residential and commercial clients, including prominent venues such as Maleny Manor, and manages projects from initial consultation through to installation.

“We’ve always worked closely with our clients,” Jim said. “They know they can trust us, and in return, we’ve had decades of repeat customers and referrals. That’s the kind of business we’re proud to run.”
