Francine Wiig reflects on a campaign that ‘put people before politics’

Fairfax candidate Francine Wiig said today (Sunday May 9, 2025) she was proud to reflect on a movement that brought integrity, truth and positivity back to politics on the Sunshine Coast.

In her first campaign, Wiig secured 12% of first preference votes. Her campaign described this as a “powerful result” that showed growing momentum for independent, community-backed leadership on the Coast.

“We set out to do politics differently, to run a positive, transparent, and community-led campaign that focused on real issues, not party lines. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together,” Ms Wiig said.

“From the very beginning, this has been a campaign powered by the community, not by party machines or corporate donors. It was built on honest conversations, genuine listening, and a shared vision for a fairer future.

“Across kitchen tables, market stalls, school pick-up zones and train stations, thousands of Sunshine Coast locals voiced their hopes and frustrations. This campaign gave them a platform. We showed what’s possible when people come together to demand better from their representatives,” she said.

“While we didn’t win the seat this time, we’ve built something enduring a grassroots movement that won’t disappear after election day. Our work continues,” she said.

Backed by more than 300 volunteers from all walks of life, Ms Wiig said her campaign showed what could be achieved without spin or scare tactics “just facts, fairness, and the courage to stand up for what matters: affordable housing, better funding for our growing region, support for small business, climate action, and a future where our children can thrive”.

FRancine Wiig: “We set out to do politics differently, to run a positive, transparent, and community-led campaign that focused on real issues, not party lines.”
