Detection dogs sniff out Forest Glen fire ant nest

A fire ant nest discovered by odour detection dogs at Forest Glen has been destroyed, with treatment and surveillance underway to ensure no ants remain.

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program said the nest was found on August 6 during compliance tracing linked to a nearby construction site.

Eradication treatment began after the discovery to safeguard Forest Glen and surrounding areas from the invasive pest.

Program senior director of operations Robert Wilson said community vigilance was essential.

“Communities play an important role in our national efforts to eradicate this invasive pest.

“It is vital that residents and business owners on the Sunshine Coast check their properties and local areas and report any findings to our program.

“Fire ants can have devastating impacts on our health, environment, economy, and outdoor way of life, which is why we need everyone to play a role in protecting their community.”

Residents and business owners are being urged to regularly inspect their properties and surrounding areas for fire ants and nests.

All findings should be reported, even when no fire ants are detected. Reports can help authorities confirm areas are clear of the pest.

Property owners are also asked to allow eradication officers access to carry out treatment and surveillance work, and to take precautions to prevent fire ants being spread through the movement of soil, mulch and other materials.
