Flickerfest returns to Nambour with world-class short films

Nambour audiences will get a rare chance to experience some of the world’s best short films later this month when Flickerfest returns to the big screen for two nights at Nambour Cinema.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2026, Flickerfest is Australia’s leading Academy Award qualifying and BAFTA-recognised short film festival, drawing thousands of entries each year from filmmakers across the globe.

More than 3,700 submissions were received for the latest festival, with the standout films now travelling the country on Flickerfest’s national tour. The Nambour stop will showcase highlights from the prestigious Bondi festival across two evening screenings.

The program opens at 7pm on Wednesday March 25 with the Best of International Shorts, celebrating storytelling and creative talent.

The Best of International Shorts, offers a cinematic trip around the world.

Among the international highlights is the Oscar-nominated A Friend of Dorothy, starring UK acting legends Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry in a heartwarming story of friendship found in unexpected places.

Also screening is the powerful The Singers, another recent Oscar nominee, alongside My Plastic Mother from Indonesia, which won Best International Short Film at Flickerfest 2026.

Animation fans can look forward to the visually striking Radix, winner of Best International Animation, while Hollywood star Renee Zellweger makes her directorial debut with They, a film about people coming together in challenging times.

The program continues at 7pm on Thursday with the Best of Australian Shorts.

Among the highlights is the award-winning comedy Laterz by Chelsea Ingram, who grew up on the Sunshine Coast and attended Buderim Mountain Primary School. The film took out Best Comedy Short Film at Flickerfest 2026 and promises plenty of laughs.

The Australian program also features Tuesday Tuesday, which won Best Female Director at Flickerfest 2026 and stars Stingers actor Peter Phelps, along with Packed Away, the directorial debut of actress Michala Banas (Always Greener, McLeod’s Daughters).

Another standout is Baby Shower, written and directed by actor Matt Day (Rake) and starring Hugo Weaving in a dark comedy exploring family dynamics and unexpected moments at a familiar social ritual.

Comedy also takes centre stage in The Suit, featuring award-winning actress Kat Stewart alongside comedian Colin Lane.
