National Gemboree returns to Nambour after five decades
From left, Nambour Lapidary club member John Flynn, Gemboree secretary Trish Flynn and and Nambour Lapidary Club president Kerrie O’Keeffe invite everyone to the National event.
Nambour will take centre stage this Easter as Australia’s largest gem, mineral and fossil show returns to town for the first time in more than 50 years, bringing a major boost for local tourism and community pride.
The 62nd annual National Gemboree will be held at the Nambour Showgrounds over the Easter long weekend, drawing enthusiasts, traders and collectors from across the country.
Gemboree secretary Trish Flynn said the event has deep historical ties to the town.
“The last time that the GEMBOREE was hosted in Nambour was Easter 1974, this was also the first GEMBOREE to be held in Queensland,” she said.
Organised this year by clubs from Nambour, Gympie, Maryborough and Bundaberg, the event promises four days of activity, showcasing everything from gemstones and crystals to fossils, minerals and handcrafted jewellery.
Visitors can browse stalls from traders travelling nationwide, watch live demonstrations, and explore the national lapidary competition, with entries on public display.
“There will be a wide range of gemstones, minerals fossils, jewellery and lapidary supplies for sale buy traders from all across Australia,” Ms Flynn said. “The national lapidary competition is also conducted at this time and all entries are on display for the public to view.
“There will be lectures, demonstrations, childrens activities and food vendors on site.”
Nambour Lapidary Club president Kerrie O’Keeffe said the return of the Gemboree was a significant moment for the local community.
“To have an event of this scale come back to Nambour after so many years is something we’re incredibly proud of,” she said.
“It’s a chance to showcase not just our club, but our whole community, and to welcome people from right across Australia to experience what Nambour has to offer.”
The event runs from midday to 5pm on Friday April 3, 9am to 5pm on Saturday April 4 and Sunday April 5, and 9am to 2pm on Monday April 6.
Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for concession and $5 for children, with parking available onsite for $10 per vehicle.
