Ready, set, grow: Time to kick off winter veggie season

Hinterland Homesteading with Racheal Pascoe

It’s that time of year again. Local gardeners have been waiting for the start of March to signal the time to start planting out winter veggies.

It’s been a long hot wait over summer. I have got some weeding to do first, to clear some beds that I was a bit slack with, but nothing that can’t be sorted out. Let’s get gardening. I love this time of year. It is like a whole fresh new start.

First time gardener?

If you have ever thought that you might like to grow some veggies, now is a terrific time to make a start.

You can easily grow a little winter crop in some large pots on the patio or if you are ready to expand, maybe you could allocate an area of your garden for veggies?

Veggies like full sun for 5-6 hours a day. Make sure you select a suitable spot for them to grow. Start to think about what you like to eat at your house. Don’t grow brussel sprouts if no one enjoys them.

If you are keen to learn more about gardening and work alongside people who have really cool gardening knowledge …  you might like to come to our local community garden?

Did you know Nambour has it’s very own community garden? It’s a wonderful space, run by a fabulous team of people who just love gardening and making Nambour a better place.

The community garden is located inside the Nambour Showgrounds, just inside the Coronation Drive main entrance.

During a gardening session, we plant out seedlings, mulch and water beds, troubleshoot pest issues, come up with solutions and new ways of doing things to get a better result. Oh and we talk and talk! Garden therapy is a real thing!

At the end of each session, we share our harvest. We have a Swap and Barter table, where gardeners can bring along anything from home and swap it for something else. It is only $25 to be a member of the community garden for the year. We would absolutely love to have you onboard. Children are welcome.

Wanting to help?

Not a gardener, but you would still like to help? We have two open air compost bays at the community garden. Please feel free to deposit your scraps and coffee grindings in the compost.

 Garden Bed Sponsorship

We still have some availability for garden bed sponsorship. Full sponsorship for the entire year is only $100. This includes all the seeds, seedings, mulch, poly pipe, netting, fertiliser etc that is needed to grow crops.

We look after the bed for you and display a sign in the garden bed with your name on it.

If you are interested in becoming a member or sponsoring the community garden, please email nambourgrownpresident@gmail.com for more information or simply deposit into our Bendigo Bank account 215014325 BSB 633 000. We would be chuffed.

 See you in the garden

We meet most (but not all) Thursdays and Sunday afternoons. We publish a list of garden session dates and times on Facebook. If you follow us on Facebook, you will be up to date with happenings.

We are next in the garden Thursday 12th March 3.30-5pm and again on Sunday 15th March 3-5pm. No need to RSVP, just come along. See you in the garden.

 Happy homesteading everyone!
