Tourism president steps down after building group from 50 members to 300

Kerry Brown has helped build strong tourism foundations.

After years of rallying local operators and putting the Sunshine Coast hinterland firmly on the map for weddings and short breaks, Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast president Kerry Brown has announced she will not recontest the role at next month’s AGM.

Ms Brown said the organisation was primed for fresh leadership after a period of strong growth, major events, publications, social media strength and renewed confidence among members.

“Change is a part of life and offers opportunity to those who are brave enough to embrace the unknown,” she said. “While it’s been a wild ride at times, I am proud of the progress that has been made at Hinterland Tourism during my time as President. And the time has come for me to move on and allow new blood to come in and take the organisation to a higher level. Exciting days ahead for Hinterland Tourism.”

Ms Brown said it had been an honour to serve the Hinterland tourism.

“When I started, we had just on 50 members, a printed map and a dated website, today we have around 300 members, two successful major events a year, printed publications and a digital footprint reaching millions of people every week.

“It has been such a big part of  my life and closing the Hinterland Tourism chapter of my life will be with many mixed emotions.

“It’s the people who make the Sunshine Coast Hinterland an extraordinary place to live and visit. When visitors come to our region, they are generally greeted by the people who own and operate a business. They are the most hospitable people who go above and beyond to make sure every visitor has a memorable experience. Most of our members work seven days a week. Their commitment to world class service is extraordinary and it has been an honour to be President for all these years.”

Under her tenure, the group strengthened ties with chambers, councils and regional tourism bodies, while member venues and experiences benefited from coordinated promotion that helped the hinterland become a sought-after destination for couples and visitors year-round. Ms Brown said the handover would be seamless thanks to a steady platform now in place.

“The foundations are strong with an outstanding administration team, established major events, a diverse digital footprint and strong membership; these attributes combined offer the incoming President and executive a tremendous start,” she said.

“I want to assure members that I will be doing all I can to ensure a smooth and successful transition, and will work closely with the new team for as long as they need. If anyone is thinking of nominating for the role and would like to discuss the responsibilities, I am always available to chat.”

Ms Brown signed off with a message that reflected the optimism shared by many operators: “Onwards we go with courage and conviction for an exciting new era for Hinterland Tourism.”
