Spring has sprung! And the dahlias are leading the way

Dahlias have sprung into flower.

Camomile flowers have just bloomed.

Hinterland Homesteading with Racheal Pascoe

Did you notice it happen? I certainly did. For weeks now there have been subtle signs in the garden. Tiny little buds on plants, new bright green growth appearing and a buzz of a season change being imminent.

Spring is a terrific time to get out in the garden and have a refresh. Maybe you have a backyard patio area which needs a gerni off? Could it do with a few pots being freshened up with new potting mix and some colourful flowers?

Or like me, I found myself snooping around on Marketplace and bought a handsome second-hand terracotta pot. I have planted it out with lavender to brighten up an area and attract the bees. Spring makes you want to refresh and make change. Run with it… enjoy this season. We all feel better when our spaces are improved… especially outdoor areas.

Spring Superstars

I didn’t know it, but I am a lover of Dahlias. They are big, bright and cheery. I had always admired them but was nervous to give bulbs a try.  I had my first lot of bulbs given to me by a friend last year. Off I went, planting bulbs throughout our garden, along our pathway on the hill. We enjoyed so many lovely flowers throughout Spring and Summer last year from the bulbs.

If you are a truly dedicated and disciplined dahlia grower… you will have removed your bulbs from the ground and stored them over winter, ready to plant again about now. But not me, I am a first-time dahlia mum and I left them in the ground, just too busy with everything else. The plants died off and I did tidy them up months ago. Now the bulbs are stirring with the change of seasons, and I am noticing them all around the place. How amazing the bulbs seem to be preprogrammed with the time to burst into action again.

More spring superstars

As I have been lifting the dahlia bulbs, I notice I have so many more. Where there was one bulb planted last year, I now have many bulbs. How lovely. My dahlias have been so happy living with me, they have had babies. Does that actually make me a Dahlia Grandma now? I am not sure. I will have to check. Hee hee. This is great value indeed.

I will lift some and move them, so we can have their amazing colours everywhere. That is the wonderful thing about gardening, you don’t necessarily have to get it exactly right. Mother nature allows for a little room to move on jobs and when they get done. Thank goodness!

Bring some springtime inside

What will you be working on this springtime, to improve your space? Keep an eye out for dahlia bulbs at the nursery, you know they love it here on the Sunshine Coast. Or maybe you have someone who might like to share a few of their bulbs with you? Dahlias make great cut flowers to bring inside, so you can enjoy them in the house too.

Happy Spring homesteading everyone!
