Carrying the weight for kids: dad’s 40kg Parkrun world record bid

A Sunshine Coast father of seven will carry 40 kilograms for five kilometres at Nambour Parkrun this Saturday in a world record attempt, aiming to raise awareness for children carrying “invisible burdens”.

Jamie Milne, a grandfather, full-time university student and owner of Sunshine Coast business JMT for 11 years, will attempt the world record for the fastest 5km carrying a 40kg deadball. He will start at 7am on Saturday, 7 November, on one of Australia’s toughest Parkrun courses.

The challenge is raising awareness and support for local children’s charity Inclusive Kids.

Research from the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre estimates that 950,100 Australian children are living below the poverty line.

“We hear about youth crime almost every day. But how often do we hear about the children struggling just to get through another day?” Mr Milne said. “That 40kg ball represents the invisible weight our kids carry. I get to put mine down after five kilometres. For many children, there’s no finish line.”

He said the attempt was about changing the conversation from judging young people to understanding, supporting & connecting with them. “Come along. Stand beside us. Let’s show these kids they’re not carrying the weight alone.”

To support the attempt come along to Nambour parkrun on Saturday at 7am. Mr Milne can be contacted through JMT at jamiemilnetraining@gmail.com.
