‘Keep safe folks’: Police investigate alleged knife threat in Currie Street

A bystander took photos of this man who may be able to help police with their enquiries:

Police are investigating an alleged knife threat against a worker in Nambour’s CBD after an incident on Currie Street on the morning of January 30.

The incident occurred during construction works near the cinema redevelopment, opposite Jaycar, and was witnessed by members of the public.

According to police, initial enquiries indicate that around 10.30am a man attempted to use a footpath that was closed due to construction.

“He was approached by a traffic controller who told him to use the other side of the road, when he became verbally aggressive and attempted to hit the traffic controller with a sign,” a police spokesperson said. “The man then threatened the traffic controller with a knife, before running off towards Mill Street.”

No charges have yet been laid.

A witness had posted a warning on Living in Nambour Facebook group, describing the confrontation and urging others to stay alert. “Watch out if you see this man. He tried to attack a tradie, I saw it happen,” the post read. “Tradie pushed him off and stood his ground. Footage was obtained and this piece of sh*t pulled a large knife. Police looking for him, but this is what he looks like. Keep safe folks!”

Witnesses said police arrived quickly after being notified, remained in the area for some time, took statements and obtained CCTV footage from nearby businesses.

The incident comes at a time when many residents and business owners have been expressing increasing concern about safety in the town centre, particularly in relation to addiction and mental health issues being played out in public spaces. Locals say repeated confrontations and antisocial behaviour are affecting confidence in the CBD and contributing to a broader sense of fatigue about the town’s direction.
