Mapleton mourns loss of much-loved businessman Kelly Anderson
IGA owner Lewis “Kelly” Anderson's legacy will continue through the generations of the Anderson family who work in the business he and Linda established.
Mapleton has lost one of its most respected community figures following the death of long-time IGA owner Lewis “Kelly” Anderson in a farm accident on August 5.
Mr Anderson, 74, was a familiar and friendly presence in Mapleton, where he and his wife Linda built their family business into an essential part of village life.
The couple took over the Mapleton IGA site in 1995 after previously working as a Maleny dairy farmer and central Queensland farmer and businessman.
What began as a strip of seven small shops was transformed after the Andersons purchased the freehold in 2004. The site grew to include the IGA supermarket, BP service station, post office and Maple Leaf Bakery and Cafe.
The Anderson family business became known for its personal service, support for local producers and willingness to help customers, particularly during difficult times.
“We are grateful to be able to live locally, employ locals, support our local producers and to give back to our community in as many ways as we can,” Mr Anderson previously told the Gazette. “It is places like Mapleton that embody the best of small towns and caring communities.”
That community spirit was returned following news of his death, with residents remembering a kind and generous family man who always had time for a conversation.
Local businessman Roger Loughnan described Mr Anderson as “a wonderful community man who will be very sadly missed”.
Len Geary said: “A sad and tragic loss. Kelly will be missed by everyone that knew him. Always a smile and a good conversation.”
Kelly Topping remembered a man who “always greeted us with kindness”, while Greg Barton said Mapleton would “surely miss him”.
Mr Anderson was a devoted husband, father to Kel and Marianne, grandfather to Brendan, Brittany, Abbey, Jack, Jessica, Kendall, Isabel and Colton, and great-grandfather to Henry.
His legacy will continue through the generations of the Anderson family who work in the business he and Linda established.
The community is invited to celebrate Mr Anderson’s life at Gregson & Weight, 34 National Park Road, Nambour, on Wednesday, August 26 at 1pm. A gathering will follow at Nambour RSL from 2.30pm.
The Mapleton IGA, BP and post office complex will close from midday that day to allow family and staff to attend. The family will hold a private burial.
