Mental health, homelessness on agenda for MP

By Cameron Outridge

New perinatal mental health beds are being established on the Sunshine Coast, allowing local mothers experiencing mental health issues to receive support while remaining with their babies.

Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt MP told the Nambour Chamber of Commerce Coffee Catch Up at Ken Mills Toyota on July 3 that approximately one in five new mothers experience mental health challenges after giving birth, making the initiative particularly important for the community.

“We are doubling the number of perinatal mental health beds across the State through the Hospital Rescue Plan, including eight new beds on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Hunt said.

The additional mother-baby beds will help to ensure local families have access to the specialist care when and where they need it during the perinatal period between conception and 12 months postpartum.

“The more we support local mums, the more we can help little Queenslanders get the very best start to life,” Mr Hunt said.

The MP also addressed the growing homelessness issue in Nambour, acknowledging it is a top priority as local businesses regularly report concerns to his office. Mr Hunt said he had recently met with Division 10 Councillor Cr David Law and Mayor Rosanna Natoli to discuss strategies, with another meeting planned involving police, health, and housing representatives.

“The homelessness issue is being brought to our attention  every day. Businesses are bringing it to us, their experiences in town. I want you to know that we are really keen to deal with that. I met with David Law and the mayor yesterday about those issues. We are setting up another meeting with police and health and housing.

"We've got the Critical Response teams from Housing in Nambour weekly now trying to assist these people," Mr Hunt said. "But, unfortunately, one of the biggest hurdles at the moment is the lack of willingness to engage. We're able to provide support to those who are open to engaging with us, but for those who aren’t ready for whatever reason – trauma, history, it becomes much more difficult."

Mr Hunt said homelessness wasn't isolated to Nambour but was affecting communities across Queensland.

Mr Hunt expressed his appreciation for the strong business turnout at the Chamber meeting.

"This Chamber is thriving. Congratulations. It's fantastic to see such a big crowd here."
