Grower keeps rare herbs thriving in the hinterland

When a Sunshine Coast specialist rare herb nursery closed its doors recently, Obi Obi local Michael Geppert saw an opportunity to keep a unique tradition alive.

Mr Geppert has launched his new business, Mix’n Herbs, to continue growing and supplying the kinds of rare and authentic herbs that have all but disappeared from the mainstream market.

“I’ve been in business for about three months now, and my goal is to keep real herbs growing here on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Geppert said. “These are genuine, original genetics from herbs sourced from all over the world — the kinds of plants you just can’t find anymore.”

Some of the herbs he grows are notoriously difficult to propagate, with certain varieties taking up to five months just to strike. “It’s slow work, but worth it,” he said. “I use only natural sprays and repellents — everything is safe, edible and chemical-free.”

Before starting Mix’n Herbs, Mr Geppert worked for the former rare herb nursery as a propagator. When the business was sold and moved away, he decided to carry the torch.

“I didn’t want to see those plants and that knowledge lost to the region,” he said. “There’s real value in keeping these natural, healing herbs alive and available for people.”

He is currently halfway through a herbalism course, expanding his knowledge to help others “unlock the natural healing power of herbs”.

Locals can meet Mr Geppert and explore his range at the Montville Growers & Makers Market on October 11.
