Blue Demons hockey club calls past players home for 50th anniversary reunion

Nambour Blue Demons Hockey Club is celebrating a half century and  would like to bring together all the club’s family to celebrate.

Nambour Blue Demons Hockey Club is calling its extended family back together to celebrate 50 years of competition, community and volunteer spirit.

Past players, administrators, officials and supporters are invited to a formal dinner at Maroochydore Surf Club on Saturday, September 12, from 5.30pm.

The celebration will be combined with the club’s 2026 Senior Trophy Presentation.

Blue Demons grew from humble beginnings, formed by a group of men and boys alongside girls who played hockey at Nambour High School. The late Bill Johnson was appointed inaugural president.

The club was based at Petrie Park in Nambour from its inception until this year, when it moved its headquarters to the Sunshine Coast Hockey Association grounds at Buderim and relinquished its lease over council facilities at the park.

Originally the local dump, Petrie Park became a major sporting hub from the 1960s and was established as a women’s sports park. It provided a permanent home for marching girls, the North Coast and Sunshine Coast hockey associations and the Vigoro Association, as well as hosting community and family events.

The first Blue Demons men’s and boys’ teams entered competition in 1977, followed by two combined women’s and girls’ teams in 1978.

A drive to establish junior teams began in the 1980s and proved a turning point for hockey in Nambour and across the Sunshine Coast. Club volunteers worked with local schools to offer hockey, helping Blue Demons grow to 14 competition teams and dominate regional competitions by the late 1990s.

Many members went on to earn state representative honours. Some who began in the club’s junior ranks continue to play and contribute through masters competitions.

Past members and supporters are also encouraged to contribute photographs or memorabilia.
