The Nambour Toads’ annual Ladies & Old Boys Day on June 14 was one for the books, with a packed verandah, thrilling rugby and a wall-to-wall celebration of club spirit, mateship and community.
The event, held in honour of Piripi Preston – a beloved player for both Nambour and Wynnum – brought more than 70 guests to the upstairs lounge to cheer on the Women’s side in the Piripi Preston Memorial Cup.
The Toads’ Women edged out Wynnum in a spirited contest, keeping the cup at home for now.
The highlight of the day, though, may have been the clash between the Toads Presidents XV and the TOLS Barbarians – a fixture stacked with legends, larrikins and more than a few secret training sessions.
The Old Boys got the edge in a tight one, although controversy surrounds the outcome of the Boat Race after a suspected false start from the Wynnum crew.
Nambour Toads President Greg Wright said the day captured everything the club stands for.
“This is what rugby is about – community, connection, and a few laughs along the way,” he said. “We saw brilliant effort from the women’s sides, our juniors helped out across the grounds, and the Old Manor was absolutely humming all afternoon. It was magic.”
Wright also thanked the volunteers who made the day a success.
“To our Cricks Cup players, our MC, Dan, the amazing kitchen and bar team, and all the juniors who pitched in – thank you.
“These days don’t happen without a huge team effort.”
The night rolled on with music, raffles and toasts to the game they play in heaven.
