Road rehab wraps up at Pigsty Hill, Booroobin

A notoriously tricky stretch of Maleny–Stanley River Road known as Pigsty Hill has received a major safety upgrade, with a realigned road now open to traffic.

Located just east of Mears Lane, the $9 million project aimed to reduce crash risk on the steep, winding section—long known by locals for its motorbike accidents.

Construction began in May 2024 and delivered wider lanes and shoulders, improved drainage, and a safer roadside by moving the alignment away from the edge of Bellthorpe Range. Roadside hazards were also cleared.

With motorists now using the new alignment, final works are underway, including: earthworks to remove the old road; site rehabilitation with native plantings; final drainage works; and line marking on the new surface.

Traffic control will remain until completion, expected by late May, weather permitting. The project was jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Road Safety Program.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the realignment had “eradicated the tight bends and moved the road further away from that dangerously steep drop-off.”

“Those wider lanes also provide more room for motorists to avoid debris, helping reduce crash risks,” Mr Powell said.

“Thanks to the Booroobin community for your patience as we reach the final stage of this vital safety upgrade.”
