Hinterland operators strike gold at state tourism awards

Hinterland operators have made their mark at the 40th Queensland Tourism Awards, with three Sunshine Coast hinterland businesses recognised for their excellence and contribution to the state’s visitor economy.
Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat at Montville led the local cohort, taking out Gold in the Hosted Accommodation category. Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World and Maleny Cheese Café also featured strongly, earning Silver in Tourist Attractions and Excellence in Food Tourism respectively. The Country House at Hunchy rounded out the hinterland’s success with Bronze in Hosted Accommodation.
The awards were announced at a gala ceremony in Brisbane on Saturday night (November 15), attended by more than 1,000 industry leaders celebrating the milestone year.
Local MP Andrew Powell praised the winners, saying their achievements reflect the hinterland’s long-standing reputation for quality, creativity and memorable experiences.
“I was blown away by the talent, dedication and range of the tourism operators recognised last night,” Mr Powell said. “Queensland is the home of the holiday – and for good reason. The Awards are a public recognition of the sensational offerings put forward by operators the length and breadth of the State.
“But the real recognition is from the millions of visitors to Queensland, who take home memories of an incredible destination with incredible people making their visit unique.”
Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Natassia Wheeler said the Sunshine Coast’s strong showing reflected the depth of innovation and commitment across the region’s operators.
“The Sunshine Coast has an incredible depth of talent and creativity across its tourism sector,” Ms Wheeler said. “From coastal experiences to hinterland retreats, these operators embody the passion and quality that keep visitors returning year after year.”
She said the awards represent months of preparation, reflection and improvement for every entrant.
“The businesses we celebrate tonight have invested in their people, their experiences and their communities – and that’s what will help shape Queensland’s reputation as a global destination.”
The accolades cap off a standout Tourism Week for the state, reinforcing the hinterland’s growing influence within Queensland’s $34.7 billion visitor economy.
