Our Show grows to become third largest in Queensland
The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show has emerged as the third largest show in Queensland, according to Show Society President Rowan O'Hara, who shared the news during a recent Nambour Chamber of Commerce event.
This achievement marks significant growth for the 118-year-old event, which has seen an impressive 84% increase in attendance in recent years, making it one of the fastest-growing shows in Australia.
"We are really trying to reimagine what we are as an agricultural show," Mr O'Hara told the audience. "It's not just an agricultural show, it's an experience."
The show now attracts approximately 35,000 visitors through the gates, with an additional 4,000-5,000 exhibitors and participants, bringing significant economic benefits to the region. Mr O'Hara noted that the event generated well over $2 million for the local economy, but emphasised that its social impact was equally important.
"The show brings the community together," he said, sharing a touching story about an elderly gentleman who met his wife of 60-70 years on a date at the show decades ago. "Those stories are the stories we get every year, bringing that whole community social aspect of what the show is and what it means to locals."
With 7000 entries last year—compared to Brisbane Royal's 21,000—the Sunshine Coast Show has established itself as a significant agricultural event. Its growth has necessitated the hiring of a general manager to support the volunteers who have been working up to 50 hours weekly.
For the June 13-15 Show, Mr O'Hara highlighted a renewed focus on agricultural education and local talent. "This year we've really changed our ring around... Every one of our major entertainers are all local," he said. “The show will feature between 200-300 sheep in the main arena. That’s something that's never been done before, along with performances by local animal trainer Joe Gardiner of Laughing Stock Productions.”
Mr O'Hara said 96% of showgoers come to the show to learn about agriculture—discovering where their food comes from and understanding the importance of the region's agricultural industry.
The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show continues to evolve while maintaining its role as a community cornerstone, bringing together businesses, exhibitors, and residents to celebrate the region's agricultural heritage and showcase local talent and produce.
