Men’s shed delivers sweet result for local growers

The Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed has turned a bumper rosella season into a boost for both the group and local businesses, with produce flowing from the patch to kitchens, distilleries and markets.

Volunteer Ray Cash said the shed had enjoyed “big harvests” this season, with demand coming from a range of outlets.

On April 9 alone, members picked about 40kg of rosellas, most of which was sent to the Brisbane Markets.

Across the season, the shed has produced 120 jars of jam, with fruit also supplying local businesses and private buyers.

A total of 72kg of rosellas went to Sunshine & Sons, where the fruit was used in a special Mother’s Day gin, while 32kg was sent to the Brisbane Markets and 15kg sold privately.

Mr Cash said the crop had been well received locally, with residents also seeking out fresh fruit and the Men’s Shed’s homemade jam.

Brady’s Fruit is stocking some of the jam, helping bring the locally grown product to a wider audience. “Despite being a very labour intensive activity it’s been quite positive for the Men’s Shed,” Mr Cash said. The harvest highlights how small-scale community growing can feed into broader local supply chains, supporting both grassroots groups and established businesses.
