Toad race raises $1200 to help young mums stay at school
What began as a light-hearted cane toad race has grown into a much-loved community tradition with a serious purpose.
The greatest (cane toad) race in the southern hemisphere has once again supported young mums involved in Burnside State High School’s respected STEMM Program raising $1200 for the cause.
Since 2014, Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien has hosted the Nambour Cup as an unconventional way to raise much-needed funds for young mothers who deserve support.
The STEMM Program (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring) provides tailored learning options, mentoring, and practical support for pregnant girls and young mothers.
Funds raised from the Nambour Cup help ensure these young women have the stability, resources and guidance they need to stay engaged in education.
What began as a light-hearted cane toad race has grown into a much-loved community tradition with a serious purpose.
This year’s race didn’t disappoint, with a cane toad named Millsy’s Rugged, sponsored by Ken Mills Toyota, hopping to victory and claiming local bragging rights for 2026.
Mr O’Brien said the fun and novelty of the race helped shine a light on such a serious cause.
“The Nambour Cup may be quirky, but its purpose is serious,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Every dollar raised goes directly to the STEMM Program, helping young mums stay in school, continue their education and build better futures for themselves and their children.”
“The community comes for the cane toads and a laugh, but what they’re really backing is a message of hope and support for young women working incredibly hard to turn their lives around.”
Mr O’Brien also paid tribute to the sponsors who make the event possible.
“The generosity of our sponsors keeps this event alive.”
“Their support means more young mums can stay in school and reach their goals, and that’s something the entire Sunshine Coast community can be proud of.”
