The Ragbags bring their infectious music to Eudlo
Acclaimed jazz accordionist John Reeves returns to the stage with his much-loved Ragbag Quartet, presenting an evening of exuberant, genre-defying jazz at Eudlo Hall on Saturday 9 May at 6:30pm.
Renowned for their infectious energy and adventurous musical spirit, John Reeves’ Ragbag Quintet delivers a richly textured performance drawing from New Orleans jazz, Gypsy jazz, Latin American rhythms, French musette, African influences, and timeless selections from the Great American Songbook. The result is a concert experience that is at once sophisticated, playful and deeply engaging — music that invites listeners to tap their toes, laugh freely and be swept along by spontaneous improvisation.
Fresh from recent studies in central France with esteemed accordion master Jacques Mornet at the Centre National et International Music Accordion (CNIMA), Reeves is eager to share the expressive and virtuosic possibilities of the jazz accordion. Trained initially as a classical pianist at London’s Royal College of Music, Reeves has performed internationally and at some of Australia’s most prestigious venues, including the Sydney Opera House, Hamer Hall and Bennett’s Lane.
He is joined by an outstanding lineup of Brisbane-based musicians:
• Jan Van Dijk (Fiddle) — deeply influenced by New Orleans swing and Gypsy jazz, with over fifteen years immersed in the Australian and international jazz scenes
• Rory Dollard (Guitar) — a specialist in jazz manouche, blending Django-inspired flair with inventive improvisation
• Samuel Vincent (Double Bass) — a seasoned performer and educator whose warmth and musical grounding keep the groove alive
• Kym Ambrose (Drums) — an in-demand drummer, composer and arranger with extensive international touring experience and deep roots in Brazilian and bossa nova jazz
Together, the quartet forms a tight yet playful ensemble, known for their joyous chemistry, dazzling musicianship and moments of unexpected musical delight. Audiences can expect swinging jazz standards, Gypsy jazz classics, original compositions and the occasional surprise, all delivered with warmth, humour and heart.
This concert promises a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere — the perfect opportunity to gather friends, enjoy a drink from the bar, and settle in for an unforgettable evening of live jazz.
