Vale Peter Aston
The current committee of Woombye School of Arts Hall acknowledges Peter Aston for his service to the community and for his commitment and dedication to his role as President of Woombye School of Arts for a solid decade, onwards from circa 2001/2002.
Peter passed peacefully away on Monday 19th October and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
With his wife Elaine by his side, Peter worked tirelessly with the Committee in organising every aspect of the maintenance and management of both Halls, including personally shouldering the task of handling the bookings.
Peter’s kind and flexible nature shone through in his helpful advice and in his consideration and support of Hall tenants.
Among other active roles in the community, Peter and Elaine took part in canvassing locals on Blackall Street to promote the establishment of a new bank for Woombye: Bendigo Bank.
Peter was a keen gardener and an active member of the Hibiscus Society, which held regular events and annual functions at Woombye Hall.
His enthusiasm for this species was evident: with his green thumbs, Peter cultivated a variety of hibiscus, named for his daughter Margaret.
The beautiful displays of flowers at these local events were well-supported by all who came to see the multitude of spectacular blooms and variety of colours.
On his retirement from President, Peter’s legacy of hard work and careful management allowed for the replacement of flooring in the Main Hall.
His legacy to Woombye School of Arts also provided a sound financial position for stable budgeting by the incoming Committee, who held true to form in following on from Peter’s firm and steady footsteps.
Woombye School of Arts carries an historical tradition of ongoing benefit and valued use by the local community and surrounding areas. Regular classes and events are held in both the Lower and Main Halls, which are well maintained.
These Halls and the community library have been supported by a long line of volunteers, notably including Elaine Aston’s dedicated tenure of voluntarily manning the library.
Peter Aston’s generous contribution of time and energy to Woombye community is appreciated.
Most importantly, Peter will be remembered for his kindness and integrity. In a tribute to Peter from Pam and Lewis Menary (retired members of the Hall Committee, now in their nineties), Pam’s heartfelt endorsement of Peter Aston rings very true: “Peter was a lovely, gentle man; a true gentleman.”
President of Woombye School of Arts, John Burge, along with our friendly group of Hall Committee volunteers, would like to extend an invitation to our meetings, held on the last Tuesday of the month at 4.30 pm.
The Hall Committee proudly upholds the long tradition of care for these beautiful Halls and we welcome anyone who would like to come along to ‘test the waters’ and consider becoming a member. Please contact Secretary, Owen Oxley, on mob. 0417 722 763.
