Therapy dogs bring smiles to local hospitals but more paws are needed

If you’ve got a gentle, people-loving pooch, Wishlist wants to hear from you. The local hospital charity is calling on Sunshine Coast and Gympie dog owners to join its Therapy Dog Program, which brings joy, calm and comfort to patients, families and hardworking health staff.

The program, proudly supported by the Petstock Foundation, is looking to expand with new Therapy Dog teams. There’s no ‘perfect’ breed – it’s all about temperament. Dogs need to be calm, well-behaved and able to handle the busy hospital environment. Handlers, too, play a key role, guiding and caring for their companions during visits.

“Being part of the Wishlist Therapy Dog Program is incredibly rewarding,” Wishlist CEO Brendan Hogan said. “Whether it’s easing a child’s nerves before surgery, lifting the spirits of someone undergoing treatment, or offering comfort to our hardworking health staff, these dogs make an extraordinary difference.”

Handlers say the role is as fulfilling for them as it is for the patients they meet. “A good therapy dog needs to have a love of humanity and a love of people,” said handler Bob Piesse, who volunteers with his dog Abby. “What makes a good dog handler is somebody who loves their dog, has a good relationship with their dog, and has time.”

For Sharon, handler of Bella and Koda, the highlight is the smiles. “I can walk into a ward or down Hospital Street and somebody will look at me in the eye and they’ll have a very neutral face, then they look down and see the dog and they just get a big smile on their face.”

From wagging tails to warm cuddles, therapy dogs bring comfort where it’s needed most. Wishlist is encouraging interested dog owners to apply and be part of this growing team.
