Construction begins on $1.5m Woombye State School entrance

Construction is now underway to upgrade the entrance of Woombye State School, delivering a safer and more accessible entry point for students, families and staff.

Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt said the project was an important commitment he made to the Woombye community ahead of the last state election and he was pleased to see work now underway.

“This is a commitment I made to the Woombye community, so it is fantastic to see the project moving from plans to construction,” Mr Hunt said.

“Every day, students and families use this entrance to get to and from school, and the new design will make that journey safer, more accessible and easier to navigate.

“This $1.5 million investment will deliver a proper separation between pedestrians and vehicles, while also providing compliant disability access.

“It is great to see demolition and earthworks already underway, and I look forward to seeing the new entrance take shape over the coming months.”

Woombye State School Principal Matthew Meharg said the project would make a significant difference to the school community.

“The school is looking forward to the upgrade of the entry as this will ensure a safe and smooth access to and from the site, as well as providing a modern upgrade to the look of the school entry,” Mr Meharg said.

“We are pleased that the design was able to incorporate the existing feature trees that are well established and provide a beautiful warmth to the entry way setting. 

“The school community is thankful for the collaboration of the P&C, the Department of Education and members of Parliament who enabled this upgrade for the school.” 

The project includes a new covered disability access ramp with handrails from the road entry to the administration front steps, as well as a dedicated pedestrian walkway and stairs with handrails.

The pedestrian walkway will also be fenced from the road access and administration drop-off and delivery bays. 

The project has progressed to the construction phase, with demolition, earthworks and block wall footings underway.

A concrete slab pour is scheduled for late September, with installation of structural steel and roofing structures expected to be completed in November.

The project contract was awarded in June 2026, with practical completion currently forecast for the end of February 2027.

Also announced in this year’s State Budget was $1.3 million in minor works funding across Nicklin’s schools, plus $550,000 for Nambour Special School to improve accessibility. Palmwoods State School received funding to improve access to the oval, while Noosa District State School’s Cooroy campus received funding for a new security fence.
