Lovers of Books: A St Valentine’s evening with six talented writers

By Nita Lester

On the evening of 14 February, while many were celebrating romance in the traditional way, our local Mapleton Library Community Centre was filled with a different kind of love: a love of books, stories, and the written word. Lovers of Books, a special St Valentine’s event, brought together six talented writers and an enthusiastic audience for a warm, inspiring night to remember.

From the moment guests arrived, there was a buzz of excitement in the air. The Library Community Centre was beautifully decorated to create an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for an evening of literary discovery. Many attendees, from devoted book club members to aspiring writers and curious newcomers, gathered to celebrate storytelling in all its forms.

The six featured writers each shared readings from their latest works, offering a rich variety of genres and voices. From heartfelt poetry and moving memoir to gripping fiction and children’s stories, the programme showcased an impressive range of talent. Each reading was followed by lively discussion, with audience members eager to ask questions about creative inspiration, writing routines, and the journeys to publication.

Adding to the pleasure of the evening were delicious nibbles and a carefully selected range of wines, which guests enjoyed upon arrival and during the interval. Dr Nita C Lester, President said, “The relaxed setting encouraged conversation, and it was wonderful to see so many people mingling, exchanging recommendations, and connecting over shared literary passions.”

A special word of thanks goes to the friendly volunteers who made the event run so smoothly. From welcoming guests at the door to arranging refreshments and assisting the writers, their dedication and warm smiles helped create the inclusive and celebratory spirit that defined the night. Margaret James, a resident said, “I attend every year, there is nowhere else on the Sunshine Coast where you can chat to authors in such a relaxed and collegial atmosphere.”

Events like Lovers of Books remind us that libraries are not only places to borrow books but vibrant community hubs where creativity flourishes. Judging by the fantastic turnout and the enthusiastic feedback, this St Valentine’s evening celebration of literature has certainly captured hearts, and they look forward to continuing this cherished annual tradition.

Here’s to stories, community, and many more evenings filled with the joy of reading.
