Woombye equestrian selected to represent Australia

Woombye’s 18 year old Aisling Jones has recently been selected to represent Australia in South Africa in September in the sport of Tentpegging.
Tentpegging is a fast paced sport derived from military equestrian manoeuvres and it requires excellent hand-eye coordination and balance to collect in ground or aerial targets while riding at a hand gallop.
“It is a sport that requires incredible skill,” said Aisling’s mother, Niamh.
“Participants are carrying either a 2 metre lance or a sword which are real weapons, and are maneuvering the weapon at speed.”
Aisling is relatively new to the sport, having only started tentpegging two years ago.
A member of the 2nd Lighthorse Regiment Woombye Troop and the AAVC Commemorate Troop, Aisling last year won the Qld and NSW U21 Tentpegging Championships.
“Traveling with horses is a huge undertaking, and their welfare is always the first priority.”
A natural horseman with a deep affinity for and connection with horses, Aisling has proven himself to be a high achiever in many fields.
“Aisling was chosen as the Inaugural Scoot Boot young rider 2026 in an international competition that rewards horsemanship,” Niamh said.
“He has been awarded his King Scout Award and Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, and he was a finalist in the Rising Star category of the Sunshine Coast Councils Biosphere Awards.”
On top of all of this, Aisling is also in the final year of his Visual Art degree, working towards becoming an equestrian artist. He manages his full time study at Southbank in Brisbane on top of everything else, and works part time as a stable hand to raise money to fund his forthcoming trip to South Africa.
“We are hoping to gain interest and support for Aisling as he needs to pay for his airfare and travel costs,” Niamh said.
“If there is anyone interested in helping us to raise funds for Aisling to represent Australia in South Africa, we would love to hear from you.”
