Solo mission to help sick kids touches down on the Coast

A Melbourne doctor on a mission to transform children’s healthcare touched down on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday July 19 as part of a national solo flight to raise $4.5 million.

Associate Professor Andrew Kornberg, a senior neurologist at The Royal Children’s Hospital, is flying 27,000km around Australia in just 24 days for Fly For The Kids – a campaign to fund a new Advanced Therapeutics Service for children with rare and complex conditions.

“These treatments offer real hope for kids with devastating illnesses,” he said. “This journey is about doing everything I can to help make them more accessible.”

Advanced therapies – such as gene therapy – can change the course of conditions like spinal muscular atrophy and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but remain difficult and costly to deliver in Australia.

Funds raised will help provide facilities, specialist staff and resources to support sustainable access to these life-changing treatments.

The Sunshine Coast leg of Professor Kornberg’s journey was one of more than 40 planned stops as he meets patients and spreads the message.
