Burnside Bandits soar at state volleyball titles

Burnside State High School’s volleyball program has enjoyed a standout season, with six students representing the Sunshine Coast Region at the 2026 Queensland Secondary Schools 16–19 State Volleyball Championships, held at the Boondall Entertainment Centre in Brisbane from July 23–26.

The school’s regional representatives included Lily McMeeken in the girls’ team, and Thomas Turner, Matthew Jessen, Charles Davis, Scott Jessen and Jye Turner in the boys’ side, with Jye later withdrawing due to injury.

The 16–19 Girls team put together an outstanding campaign, winning every pool match 3–0 to finish the group stage undefeated. A spirited comeback in the semi-final against Met North forced a deciding fifth set, but the team narrowly went down, sending them into the bronze medal playoff against Met West. The girls responded in style, claiming a 3–0 victory to secure the Bronze Medal.

The 16–19 Boys team went one better, progressing through pool play and a semi-final against Met East without dropping a single set. That form carried them into the gold medal match against Met North – a rematch of the previous year’s decider. This time the Sunshine Coast boys were dominant, winning 3–0 to claim the Gold Medal and the State Championship title.

Individual honours followed for several Burnside students. Thomas Turner capped a stellar tournament by being named Player of the Tournament and earning selection in the Queensland U19 School Volleyball Merit Team – a rare dual achievement. Matthew Jessen, Charles Davis and Scott Jessen were also named in the Merit Team, meaning four Burnside students were recognised among the state’s best players.

The school’s involvement extended beyond the players, with staff members Hayley Shillig serving as team manager and Terry Moore coaching the 16–19 Girls team throughout the championship.

Mr Moore, Coordinator of Burnside Bandits Volleyball and Volleyball Excellence Teacher, praised the efforts of everyone involved.

“A huge congratulations to all our athletes and staff for their commitment, skill, and teamwork,” he said. “You’ve done Burnside SHS and the Bandits Volleyball program proud.”

The results cap off a strong campaign for the Burnside Volleyball program, which began with six students earning regional selection back in Term 1 – itself considered a significant achievement reflecting the depth and dedication within the school’s volleyball ranks.
