Imaginations take flight at butterfly workshops

CHILDREN will be able to turn butterflies into puppets, costumes and theatre during two creative workshops at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens on Saturday 7 November.

The workshops form part of a special morning devoted to discovering the secrets of butterflies, with activities combining nature, art and performance in the garden’s Whipbird Shelter.

Children aged five and six will take part in the first workshop from 8.30am to 10am, designing and decorating their own butterfly puppets with the Catbird Theatre Group.

A second workshop, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, is aimed at children aged eight to 12.

Participants will create a short theatrical performance based on the life cycle of a butterfly, set to music within the botanic gardens. They will also make natural costumes to use in the performance, working alongside teaching artists from the Catbird Theatre Group.

Both workshops will begin with a guided walk through the gardens’ new Butterfly Garden, giving children the chance to observe the environment and gather inspiration before getting creative.

A Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens guide and Catbird Theatre Group teaching artists will accompany the children on the walk.

The workshops will be held at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, Palm Creek Road, Tanawha.

Cost is $10 per child and bookings are essential as numbers are limited. Bookings are available through Eventbrite.
