Book launch brings Montville’s history to life

The Montville Hall was abuzz with excitement on Saturday afternoon, 15th August, as around 60 guests gathered for the launch of Cate Patterson’s debut novel, Through Her Eyes. Supported by the Montville Village Association (MVA), the event celebrated the district’s rich heritage, with Association President Deb Davis remarking in her opening address that it was “wonderful to see the history of the local district validated by featuring in a novel.”

The launch drew a remarkable crowd, including past residents and descendants of the early pioneers who inspired the story. Among them were the granddaughter, great granddaughter, and great great granddaughter of Jinny Smith, as well as granddaughters and great granddaughters of John and Emily Aird (née Smith) and Owen and Margaret Callaghan. Their presence added a touching sense of continuity to the proceedings.

Inside the hall, guests could browse a fascinating display of historical resources and family heirlooms that helped Cate bring her characters to life. Treasures included a christening gown, Henry Smith’s hymnal, a pendant necklace worn by Jinny Smith with her daughter’s photo, and Mabel Smith’s postcards from 1907-1910.

Cate’s friends and family, made a cheerful group of volunteers, ensuring the afternoon ran smoothly, serving a delicious vintage style afternoon tea, managing book sales, and setting up an engaging slideshow. A special highlight came when Cate’s son, visiting from Melbourne, presented her with printed copies of a picture story book he created based on the novel. The story is paired with charming Edwardian-style illustrations and promises to delight readers of all ages.

With 33 books sold on the day and a warm, supportive atmosphere, the launch was hailed as a resounding success. Through Her Eyes remains available at the Montville Post Office, the Montville Growers and Makers Market, and by emailing Cate at catepatterson294@gmail.com.
