After 30 years in the ring, Charlie steps back as Jayda steps up
OneHeart Training Academy has entered a new chapter, with long-time boxing coach Charlie Wetere handing over day-to-day training to his protégé, 22-year-old Jayda Glazebrook.
The club held its final session at C-Square on Wednesday before it relocates to FitKat Boot Camp and Boxing, where Ms Glazebrook will now run classes for men and women. Mr Wetere will remain involved in an advisory capacity after three decades coaching in Nambour.
“I will still train the local fighters when they need me,” he said. That includes Nambour’s Lyn Mills, he said, who at 71 recently became Australia’s oldest female amateur boxer. “Lyn wants to keep going. She will out-live all of us I reckon.”
He said the decision to step back was difficult but timely. “After 30 years and over 10 years in C-Square, working with youth, it’s time to hang up the gloves,” he said.
OneHeart has long been known for its positive, community-first approach.
While the club once supported young people facing challenges, Ms Glazebrook said that had not been its focus for some time – and it was not the reason she first walked through the door.
She came to boxing at 13 and said the sport changed her life in a way that had nothing to do with being “troubled”.
“Boxing did save my life, but not because I was a troublesome teen,” she said.
“It was having someone there always in my corner, pushing me past my limits and showing me how strong I could truly be – as well as countless support and encouragement.”
She said OneHeart’s mission has always been to lift people up, build confidence and strength, and help them discover their potential.
Now taking on the lead coaching role, Ms Glazebrook says she wants to continue that spirit. “The goal is to build people up,” she said. “Confidence, resilience, belief – that’s what we want to grow.”
Mr Wetere said he is proud to see her take the reins. “She’s ready,” he said.
Training will resume at FitKat Boot Camp and Boxing in the coming weeks.
