Birthday victory puts Cooper in Australian dirt track history

North Arm teenager Cooper Archibald celebrated his 17th birthday by racing into Australian motorcycling history at the 2026 Australian Senior Dirt Track Championship.

Archibald won the premier Pro 450 title at the national championship meeting in Canberra on May 23–24, defeating former champion Cody Lewis and Lachlan Russell in a highly competitive final.

The event, promoted by the ACT Motorcycle Club, attracted leading dirt track riders from across Australia.

Archibald’s victory made him the first Ducati rider to win an Australian senior dirt track championship, aboard the manufacturer’s new Desmo 450MX.

It also placed his name on one of Australian motorcycle racing’s longstanding honours, the Duke of Edinburgh Trophy.

Despite its name, the trophy is not connected with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award youth-development program.

The perpetual motorcycle racing trophy is associated with the highest-capacity classes at the Australian Senior Dirt Track Championship. The name of the Pro 450 champion is inscribed on the trophy each year, alongside those of previous Australian champions.

Archibald’s success came soon after his move into senior competition, following an impressive junior career.

He entered the senior Pro 450 ranks after twice winning the Junior Lites category in the Aussie Flat Track Nationals, where he established himself among the country’s leading young riders.

Motorcycling Australia identified Archibald as one of the riders stepping up to test himself against Australia’s best Pro 450 competitors during the 2025 flat track season.

Less than a year later, he has secured the Australian senior dirt track crown.

His championship victory was among several national titles decided during two days of racing in Canberra.
