A Coolum Beach training provider is working with local schools and industry partners on a proposed Civil Academy to create pathways for young people into construction and civil works.
Diggerman Training director Richard Burke said demand for skilled workers was growing as investment in infrastructure projects increased across the region.
“We are currently in discussions with industry partners and local high schools to develop a Civil Academy aimed at supporting young entrants into the industry,” Mr Burke said.
“It is shaping up to be a very exciting initiative, unlike anything else currently available on the Coast and it has the potential to create future pathways into the civil and construction sectors.”
The proposal comes as Queensland records an increase in apprentices entering construction trades. State Government figures show 10,381 apprentices began training across Queensland during the financial year to date, including almost 3,000 in construction – a 27.4 percent increase for the sector.
Almost 13,000 Queensland apprentices also completed their qualifications during 2025.
Ninderry MP and Police and Emergency Services Minister Dan Purdie recently visited Diggerman Training to inspect its programs and discuss workforce needs in the construction and civil industries.
“It’s great to see facilities like Diggerman Training where workers begin their careers and gain the skills and licences required to work safely and competently,” Mr Purdie said.
He said developing more skilled workers would be important as major infrastructure, housing and transport projects progressed across the Sunshine Coast.
The State Government has introduced wage subsidies intended to help small businesses employ and retain apprentices. A free Career Taster program is also being delivered through TAFE Queensland, giving Year 10 students practical exposure to industries including construction and healthcare.
A $78 million TAFE Centre of Excellence for construction and allied trades is also planned for Caloundra.
Diggerman Training will host a free industry breakfast for prospective
