Late-blooming artist puts Coast on canvas in library exhibition
Graeme Aitken’s exhibition is on at Nambour Library until November 5.
At almost 80, Nambour artist Graeme Aitken is proving it is never too late to discover where a creative passion might lead.
After taking up painting seriously only about four years ago, Graeme has brought together 58 works for Our Special Corner of the World, an exhibition now showing at Nambour Library until November 5.
The collection captures familiar scenes from across the Sunshine Coast, from hinterland landscapes and historic buildings to seascapes and everyday views that might otherwise be passed without a second glance.
Most were painted on location, or en plein air, with Graeme heading out alone or with local artist groups to capture his impressions of the places around him.
The exhibition includes works in watercolour, pen and wash, oils, acrylics and gouache.
“I go out with a couple of local artist groups, as well as solo, to produce impressions of iconic views and more everyday views of the Coast,” Graeme said.
He said the collection included “seascapes, landscapes, historic buildings and other features of both the hinterland and seaside areas”.
For Graeme, who turns 80 at Christmas, the exhibition also represents a personal milestone. “I have only been seriously painting for around four years - so I’m not sure if or when I will get the opportunity to have such a comprehensive exhibition in the future,” he said.
