Himalayan trek raises $68,900 for Parkinson’s research

A group of 34 Australians has helped raise $68,900 for Parkinson’s disease research after taking on some of the world’s most demanding Himalayan trails.

The Himalayan Challenge, run by Trek Ready Himalayas, supported Shake It Up Australia, which funds Australian-led Parkinson’s disease research.

Participants from Toowoomba, the Latrobe Valley, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast took part in the challenge across April and May, trekking through altitude, cold and remote terrain.

Trek Ready Himalayas founder and expedition leader Gary McKitterick Gillett, an Allied Health Assistant at Nambour Hospital, said the challenge had combined adventure with a clear purpose.

Trekkers raised funds and helped increase awareness of Parkinson’s disease, one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions worldwide.

The campaign was supported by sponsors, community members and advocates.
Shake It Up Australia directs 100 percent of donations to Australian research projects, with funds supporting work aimed at improving treatments and ultimately finding a cure.

Trek Ready Himalayas said planning was already under way for the Himalayan Challenge 2027, which is expected to launch later this year.

The next challenge will offer eight treks, including Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Manaslu Circuit and Langtang Valley.

Mr McKitterick Gillett said the aim was to build on this year’s result and continue raising funds and awareness through purpose-driven adventure.
