Award winning theatre company stages award-winning play

Perseverance Street Theatre Company is proud to present the critically acclaimed play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time — a powerful, moving and visually engaging production that celebrates community, connection, and the extraordinary talents emerging from regional Queensland.

At the heart of this production is an important mission: creating meaningful opportunities for regional performers to work alongside professional creatives and experience industry-level theatre-making close to home.

Director Riley Hotham said the production has provided an invaluable opportunity for local performers to experience the depth and discipline of a professional rehearsal process.

“There are very few opportunities for creative people in regional towns to work with professional directors and experience the richness of an industry-level rehearsal room,” Hotham said.
“This project is about building the capacity of local actors, giving them genuine ensemble experience, and supporting them with professional lighting, sound and set design.”

The production features a dedicated intergenerational cast made up entirely of local performers who have collectively devoted more than 80 hours of rehearsal to bring this challenging and deeply human story to life.

Adapted from Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time follows Christopher Boone, a neurodivergent teenager with autism, as he sets out to solve the mystery of a neighbour’s dead dog. Along the way, the play explores family, trust, resilience, and the power of community support.

Artistic Director Sharon Hogan said the play resonates deeply because of its message about understanding and collective care.

“What this story reminds us is that it takes a whole community to help people thrive,” Hogan said.
“Supportive teachers, caring neighbours, loving parents — despite their differences and mistakes — all play a role in creating an environment where Christopher can succeed. At its heart, this play is about compassion, connection and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.”

The production also provides a major opportunity for rising young performers Caleb Denham and Emily Monk to further develop their acting craft in demanding lead roles, while strengthening the skills and confidence of the broader ensemble.

Hogan said choosing productions for Perseverance Street Theatre Company is always about recognising and nurturing emerging local talent.

“This particular production offered an exciting opportunity for Caleb and Emily to really push their acting skills while also helping build the confidence and capacity of our wider cast,” she said.
“Community theatre is about more than performance — it builds social connection across generations and creates meaningful collaboration between people from all walks of life.”

Adding to the significance of the production is the mentoring partnership between emerging director Riley Hotham and Matilda Award-nominated director Sharon Hogan, recently recognised as one of Queensland’s top five theatre directors creating live performance.

As a regionally based not-for-profit theatre company, Perseverance Street Theatre Company is a six-time Matilda Award nominee that continues to champion ambitious and relevant theatre that inspires audiences while nurturing local talent and strengthening community connection.

Audiences can expect an emotionally rich, visually dynamic production that is both entertaining and thought-provoking — and a chance to support local artists creating extraordinary theatre right here in our region.
