Montville honours quiet achievers who make village shine
Montville’s tradition of recognising those who give above and beyond was on full display on Australia Day as two long-serving locals were honoured for decades of quiet, practical service to the village.
This year’s Montville Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Kath Ashlin, a resident whose hands-on commitment has helped shape the look, feel and liveability of the town’s Main Street for more than two decades.
For over 22 years, Ms Ashlin has volunteered countless hours gardening, cleaning and organising others to help maintain Montville’s public spaces, often stepping in where council support was absent.
She has personally funded plants and decorations, transforming neglected areas into welcoming spaces for locals and visitors alike.
Her efforts have not only improved the appearance of the town but have contributed to safety, pride and a strong sense of community, with many locals crediting her leadership and generosity for inspiring others to lend a hand.
The Montville Lifetime Citizenship Award was presented to Mark Roderick, recognised as a cornerstone of the community through 36 years of service with the rural fire brigade, including 25 years as First Officer.
Mr Roderick’s leadership has played a critical role in keeping Montville safe, guiding emergency responses and delivering training to rural fire brigades across the Sunshine Coast.
His willingness to share his time and expertise has earned deep respect and trust, and he is widely regarded as an embodiment of volunteer service.
Montville Village Association President Deb Davis praised both recipients for leaving a lasting and positive impact on Montville, reflecting the spirit of service, generosity and care that defines village life.
The association also thanked the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club, the Simpson Brothers Band, the Mapleton Choir, flag raisers Mathylda, Saxon and Addie, the Blackall Range Lions Club, and volunteers from the MVA events group and management committee for helping make the celebration memorable.
The next Montville Village Association general meeting will be held on Wednesday February 24 at 5.30pm for 6.00pm at Montville Village Hall. Everyone is welcome.
