A beautiful room can be a fresh start

For women rebuilding their lives after hardship, having a beautiful, comfortable bedroom can mean much more than simply having somewhere to sleep.

That's the thinking behind Lily House's latest project, supported by a grant from the Nambour Community Foundation.

Lily House representative Jo Higgins told the foundation's 10th anniversary grants presentation that the funding would be used to refurbish bedrooms for women experiencing disadvantage.

Jo said many of the women arriving at Lily House had experienced broken lives, difficult circumstances and considerable heartache.

She believes creating a welcoming, attractive bedroom can help restore a sense of dignity and show women what is possible for their future.

“If we can give them a room where they walk in and they go, ‘Look, it's beautiful. The doona's pretty. The sheets are white. Everything matches,’ it will go a long way,” Jo said.

The project will involve replacing worn and broken furniture, including troublesome chests of drawers, with matching furnishings.

Jo joked that assembling the new flat-pack furniture would provide an additional challenge for the Lily House team.
