Nest in Witta: Sue and Trevor’s café creates a hub in the hills, brings people in

For the past three years, Sue and Trevor Young have turned Nest in Witta Café into more than just a place for coffee. With sweeping views down the range, a welcoming atmosphere and strong community ties, it has become a hub for locals and a destination for visitors. We asked Sue and Trevor about their café, their challenges and their proudest moments.
Q: What inspired you to open Nest in Witta?
We wanted to create a space where people could gather, relax and feel at home.
Q: What makes your café unique compared to others? We’re a true community hub where locals come together. The views down the range and valley are beautiful, the sunsets are special, and we’ve got easy parking, lots of grass for picnics and even a walking path.
Q: What are your most popular menu items?
Our coffee is always a hit. The house-made carrot cake and gluten-free apple yoghurt slice are favourites, and our sausage rolls are very popular too.
Q:Do you use local suppliers?
Yes — we use Maleny Dairies, Walter’s Artisan Bread and meat from Maleny Butcher. Supporting local is important to us.
Q: Who are your typical customers?
It’s a real mix — locals, craft groups, community groups, tourists, car clubs, and motorbike groups.
Q: How do you connect with the ommunity?
We support most local charities where we can. It’s important for us to give back.
Q: What’s been your biggest challenge?
Sometimes the weather can be difficult, and occasionally we run out of room when it’s really busy. But nothing too major.
Q: What achievement are you most proud of?
The impact the café has had on our community. It’s become a place where people catch up and reconnect — friendships have been built here, and that’s really special.
Q: Do you have plans for the future?
We’d love to get our pizza nights and bring in a great crowd.
Q: What’s your personal favourite menu item? Turmeric hummus with roast pumpkin and preserved lemon on sourdough.
Q: Can you tell us about the wedding photo and the car club picture?
The wedding photo is of Wes and Vicky, who moved down the road when we first opened. They became daily customers, held family parties here, and later chose the café as their wedding venue.
The car club, Witta Wheels, started in 2022. Trevor and three mates organised a monthly meet-up where everyone parks on the grass, grabs a coffee and something to eat. Car clubs come from the Coast, and it’s a great morning of networking and talking cars and bikes.
