New name strikes right note for historic band

The Sunshine Coast’s oldest concert band has adopted a new name reflecting its growing membership across Nambour and the hinterland.

The former Noosa District Concert Band Inc officially became the Hinterland Concert Band Inc in July, marking the latest chapter in a musical history stretching back 40 years.

The band began in January 1986 when a group of talented amateur and professional musicians came together to share their love of music with fellow players and the wider community.

It incorporated in September 1991 with 36 members and spent many years rehearsing and performing at venues throughout Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.

A significant change came at the beginning of 2018 when rehearsals moved to the Sunshine Brass Band Hall in Nambour.

The relocation helped attract more musicians from across the Sunshine Coast, particularly Nambour and surrounding hinterland communities.

Membership now stands at about 30, with players coming from Montville and Mapleton to Eumundi and Sunshine Beach, although most live in the wider Nambour area.

The band believes its former name no longer accurately represented its membership, prompting the change to Hinterland Concert Band Inc.

Rehearsals continue under the leadership of music director and conductor Julie Dean, an experienced music teacher and musician.

The band welcomes woodwind, brass and percussion players of all ages, from upper primary and secondary students through to retirees.

Prospective members should be able to read music and have skills comparable with secondary school level or about two years’ playing experience.

Members generally provide their own instruments, although some larger instruments may be available through the band’s loan program. Interested musicians are encouraged to contact the band to find out what is available.

The group describes itself as having a friendly, inclusive and supportive family culture. Prospective members can attend rehearsals for several weeks before deciding whether to join.
